Rama: No to signal shutdown on Sinulog

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama does not agree on the police recommendation to shut down telecommunication services, as part of the security measures, during the Sinulog 2023 grand parade on January 15.

Rama declared his vehement objection to the recommendation during the official launching of the Sinulog 2023 Festival at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño yesterday afternoon.

Dili.Dili.Dili.Dili.Dili…inyong mahinumduman, dili ko gusto Sinulog nga dili…Gusto ko’g Sinulog nga pwede, dapat, dapat (naay signal),” Rama told reporters.

The Police Regional Office (PRO)-7 recommended a shutdown of telecom signals during the Sinulog Grand Parade for security reason. A special gun ban will also be implemented on that day.

The PNP chief has already approved the suspension of all permits to carry firearms outside residence in Cebu except for security personnel securing the Sinulog festivities.

The Sinulog 2023 Festival was officially launched yesterday following a Mass at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, which Rama and Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia attended.

It was followed by a launching parade from the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño to the Cebu City Sports Center. Cultural dancers from different schools and universities performed on the streets.

The governor was hopeful that the unity between the province and the city government would inspire other officials.

Rama, for his part, said there are still a lot of things to be done and they need everyone’s support and cooperation.

“Trabaho, trabaho ug tabang ug tabang…Mao gyud na siya,” said Rama.

Cebu City Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia described yesterday’s launching of the Sinulog 2023 as historic since it was the first time that the city and the provincial governments have joined forces to come up with One Cebu Island Sinulog.

“Today marks the start were the entire island combined together…To make this a very memorable one,” the vice mayor said.

He acknowledged Rama for presenting such an idea to the other leaders in Cebu island.

“If not for MLR…This is his idea, this is his brainchild,” Vice Mayor Garcia added.

Rama said the concept was inspired by the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic to the political leaders of Cebu as one island.

The mayor grabbed the opportunity to lash at his critics and those who are skeptics of his Singapore-like vision. He urged them to instead help and pray to make things possible.

I believe Señor Santo Niño…Ampo, ampo…We need your help…we need your prayer to make one Sinulog festive, religious, cultural –orderly peaceful, memorable successful in the name of Señor Santo Niño…Pit Senyor,” Rama said.

Before the grand showdown at the South Road Properties (SRP) on July 15, close to 20 contingents will be competing against each other in the One Cebu Island Sinulog sa Kabataan at the Cebu City Sports Center tomorrow, January 8. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol with Rowena Capistrano and Sanden Anadia/FPL
